Sue started working with the human body in 1990 when she trained and qualified in Therapeutic Massage with Clare Maxwell-Hudson. Several years later she studied Shiatsu Massage with the European School of Shiatsu Therapy and Movement and Japanese seated massage. Sue also trained with the European Rolfing Association in Munich and the Australian Rolfing Association in Sydney and qualified as a Rolfer in 2005. Her Therapeutic Massage and Myofascial Release sessions incorporate the work of Ida Rolf, Eric Dalton, Moshe Feldenkrais, Tom Myers and Art Riggs.


Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a whole body treatment that recognises that tightness and restrictions in one area of the body can cause compensatory patterns which affect the whole structure. It works directly on restricted fascia, which is like a thin tissue that covers all muscles and organs of the body. Fascia gives the body support and structure, it can be thought of as a deep body stocking.  If the body experiences, stress, trauma, emotional or physical, or becomes used to being in a particular position, e.g sitting for long periods in front of a screen, the fascia becomes short and tight and pulls on the skeleton. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body causing discomfort and compensatory patterns of tension.

The practitioner works directly on restricted fascia, using knuckles, elbow or forearm to slowly and gently sink into the fascia. The fascia responds to this contact and starts to soften and ease, the practitioner is then able to release and elongate the tissue. The receiver may be asked to slowly move the area being worked on to improve the release and increase the function of that area. The practitioner stays in verbal communication with the receiver to check that the work is an acceptable pressure and is comfortable.

Myofascial can also help to improve the function of the body, leading to better movement and flexibility. Developing a better awareness of your body is crucial in order to find new ways to move. Habitual patterns of behaviour can cause long term problems and so when freeing up the tissue it is important for the body to be offered a new possibility so the structure does not regress to it’s old ways of movement. This form of somatic therapy is based on the works of Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, and many others, who developed this style of bodymind therapies. They all recognised the importance of working with the mind to make deep changes in the physical body.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue helping to release areas of tension, free up painful knots and restore flexibility to the muscular system. My particular type of massage is unique and uses a fusion of Swedish massage, shiatsu and deep tissue techniques.  It can be firm, but it does not mean that it is painful. Each massage session is based on what the individual needs. It can be a deeply relaxing session or if there is a persistent area of tension, the session can focus on smaller localised areas, e.g. back, neck & shoulders or lower back and legs. I can use aromatherapy oils, or just a plain grapeseed oil.

Thai Foot Massage

Thai Foot Massage is a massage of the feet and also lower legs. Thai foot massage is both invigorating and deeply relaxing and involves hands on massage, stretching and acupressure to stimulate reflex points. It has elements of Shiatsu, Reflexology, and Chinese massage, incorporated into the treatment. Traditional Thai Foot Massage includes the use of a traditional Thai foot massage stick as well as using the palms, fingers, thumbs and knuckles to work the feet.

The Treatment includes working on ‘Sen’ lines, which are the equivalent to the meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The techniques of Thai Foot Massage are thought to stimulate and open these energy channels, leaving you feeling relaxed, balanced and invigorated. Great for tired feet.
